What's Your Scene?

One sunny afternoon in San Francisco, my husband Duane drew this sketch. What I like about it is how relaxed I look.  It reminds me of how nice it is to make time to simply lie down on the earth, feel the warmth of the sun and read a good book.  What it doesn’t show is how much effort it took that day to get to this “relaxed” image, nor how brief the moment was.

I’ve spent many years setting goals, having expectations and generally striving to achieve.  I have so many planners, I could open my own Franklin Covey store.  The society we live in puts an enormous amount of pressure on us to do and have, most success books, even metaphysically ones, place quite of bit of emphasis on achievement.   Recently, I came across a wonderful website and book.  It’s called the Type Z Guide to Success with Ease. I’ve just started reading it, but so far I love it.   The author, Marc Allen says we can be lazy, unorganized and wealthy.  I don’t know about you but, that sounds really good to me!

One of the first things he suggests you do is ask yourself what the “scene” of your life will look like in five years.  I like the use of the word scene because it brings in more of your senses, it sounds more organic, effortless.  I’ve started a mind map of my scene.   It includes a lot of words and images that induce an scene of ease, calm, wealth, flow, light, and rhythm.  It smells like patchouli and sage.  It’s warm like a spring day and as cool as autumn.  Money and ideas flow like water.  I have no needs, for they all are met.  Abundance is my very nature.

Happy Birthday!?

Posted on Apr 20th, 2008 by Dwanimen : Ori Ire Dwanimen

I wasn’t sure what this birthday was going to bring my way.   I’d hoped to be in San Diego visiting my daughter and grandchildren.  We had planned to participate in the March of Dimes Walk in honor of my grandson Jelani (he would have been 2-yrs old on April 4th).  For anyone that know me - or any Aries for that matter - you have had the privilege to experience the exuberant joy we have on our birthdays.  For example, all day long I would normally answer the phone “happy birthday to me.”  Not this year because, I had the birthday blues.  I was longing to be in San Diego and I was in Oakland.

A few weeks earlier, I’d received a newsletter from the African American Arts & Culture Complex in San Francisco.  It was an invitation to attend the 100th  (yes, one hundred year) Birthday Celebration of the artist Frances Catlett (Catlett Bio.tiff).  I asked my long-time friend Robin to come with me, and as the day arrived, I thought to invite my new friend Kimberly.  So, off to San Francisco we went - all of us in our various funky moods.  I had also invited LaTasha, a new friend I just met a fews week before.  LaTasha’s birthday was the day before mine - she too was singing the blues.

But after seeing the beautiful paintings, sipping a little wine, eating a couple of big juicy strawberries - things were lookin’ up.   And, Ms. Catlett, well she just blew us all away.  She is a dynamic, energetic woman who closed the program by dancing to the rhythms of the African drummers who were there to play for her.

After experiencing the vibrant art and life of Frances Catlett, the four of us went to Cafe Gratitude.  Let’s just say we were ALL smiles by the end of the day.

Easy- Breezy

Posted on Jan 27th, 2008 by Dwanimen : Ori Ire Dwanimen
Dancin-tree

When I started the New Year, I had all these wonderful ambitions.  Each time I sent an email, my signature line would include the following:

“The year 2008 is about ’ori ire’ - one who’s consciousness is aligned with their destiny. I will actualize my consulting & coaching practice, fully embrace my wealth consciousness. I will energize my soul through yoga & meditation, and celebrate my body in dance, running and strength training. I will continue to radiate, vibrate and expand into full awareness of myself as a divine being. And, I will be, do, and have it all with ease, joy and integrity.”

Although I still have these as my aspirations, I no longer end my emails with this message.  Instead, I’ve decided to take another approach.  One that I think is more powerful and more challenging...”Take it Easy on Yourself.”

When I was a little girl growing up in Los Angeles during the 70’s, folks would always part by saying “Take it Easy.”  Now in 2008, we are all so caught up in manifesting - wealth, relationships, businesses, and for some of us spiritual enlightenment, Ease has even become a project.

So my new motto for 2008 is Take it Easy on Yourself...be like the dancing tree - rooted and flowing.    Easy and Breezy.
